GOLF ASSOCIATIONS

British Columbia Golf Assocation

A History in Action. The British Columbia Golf Association was established in 1922 and was incorporated in 1955. It is the governing body of amateur golf for in British Columbia and functions for the benefit of golfers in the Province.

The Golfing Union of Ireland

Found in 1891, the Golfing Union of Ireland is the oldest golfing union in the world. The nine original clubs, which formed the Union, were located in Ulster, but golf in Ireland at the time of the establishment of the Union was not confined to that province. In all, 28 greens', as golf courses were then designated, had been opened for play by the time the Union was founded on 12th October 1891. The Ladies Golf Union was founded in 1893, as was also the Irish Ladies Golf Union. The United States Golf Association followed in 1894; the Welsh Golf Union came next in 1895, and not until after the First World War did the Scottish Golf Union in 1920 and the English Golf Union in 1924 join the circle. Golf in those early years was enjoyed by comparatively small groups, and while the number of clubs gradually grew, the staging of the Canada Cup, now known at the World Cup in Ireland at Portmarnock Golf Club in 1960, really set the scene alight in Ireland.

National Amputee Golf Association

An original group of 12 men with amputations was the nucleus of today's national organization. Dale Bourisseau, a veteran of World War II in which he received his below knee amputation, looked up comrades with similar injuries and encouraged them to try golf as a means of recreation and to re-enforce pride. Dale teamed up with Possibilities Unlimited, a group of people with disabilities formed in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to gathering players by word of mouth, Dale also traveled with golf clubs as part of his sales position. Eventually, the band of amputee golfers became regional, with friendly games developing into tournament play in various cities.

Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St.Andrews

In 1897, the "R&A" became the "Governing Authority" on the Rules of Golf. Since then, with the exception of the United States of America, whose allegiance lies with the United States Golf Association, and Canada, which is self-governing but affiliated to the R&A, every country which has taken up the ancient game has affiliated to the R&A and accepts its authority.

The RCGA has been serving Canadian golfers since 1895, providing support, encouragement and expertise as the game, and the country, have grown through the past century. The RCGA, in cooperation with the provincial golf associations, shall foster, promote and develop the game of golf in Canada.

Chateau des Vigiers

The Chateau dates back to the late fifteen hundreds when Jean Vigiers acquired the property from the Duchess La Rochefoucault, Lady of Saussignac, which in those days was a place of some importance as the King of France at the time was very fond of its sweet wine. Jean Vigier, a royal judge in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, started to build Chateau des Vigiers in 1597, and the construction work was completed in 1621. The chateau offers luxurious accommodation, a vineyard, four star restaurant, spa and 18 hole golf course.

Cape Kidnappers

Set atop 6,000 rolling acres of pasture land, The Farm encompasses terrain which is reminiscent of Montana but plunges 800 feet into the sea. The cluster of lodge buildings are suggestive of a working farm. A combination of stone and weathered wood, the buildings combine rustic materials with comfortable up-to-date furniture. Carnoustie Golf Links

Golf has been played over the links at Carnoustie since the 1500's but the present course came into being in 1850 when it was designed by Alan Robertson of St Andrews. Some 20 years later the legendary Old Tom Morris improved and extended the course to 18 holes and in 1926 the famous architect James Braid redesigned the Championship course extensively.

Clearview Golf Club

Lahinch Golf Club

The origins of Lahinch Golf Club go back to the closing decade of the nineteenth century. In 1892 officers of the famous Black Watch Regiment stationed in Limerick came upon a vast wilderness of duneland two miles from the spectacular Cliffs of Moher.

Portmarnock Golf Club

On Christmas Eve of 1893 a Scottish Insurance broker named W.C. Pickeman and his friend George Ross rowed over from Sutton to the peninsula of Portmarnock to scout out the land as a possible golf links. They liked what they found. The peninsula of Portmarnock is about two miles long and covers some 500 acres. It was links land: low sand dunes, small green hollows and long valleys.

Tralee Golf Club

Instituted October 1, 1896, Tralee Golf Club opened its present Arnold Palmer-designed course for play at Barrow in October, 1984, after moving from its nine-hole course at Mounthawk near Tralee. It was a great feat of achievement for the Club. Since the members (led by John Kelliher, Karl Condon) decided to buy land at Barrow back in 1980, their dream of seeing the Club attain world-wide status has been realized.
